1078 Gallery Installation
A uniqueness and singularity exists within each person’s view of what it means to survive. This feeling of survival may appear in the form of the psychological, sexual, political, environmental, professional, familial, etc. In my personal exploration of this the phrases “alone togetherness” and "dreaming keeps me grounded" were in the forefront of my mind as I produced work.
This exploration delved into the different ways people experience and understand their sense of personal continuity through installation art, sculpture, print design, and graphic design in the exhibition "My Witness is the Empty Sky" at the 1078 Gallery. In collaboration with artists Alicia Escott, Cameron Kelly, and Cybele Lyle.
Gallery Events Statement: In coordination with this exhibition, local groups offer related events and activities. The intent for the programming is to invite established groups to use 1078 Gallery as a place to share what they do and think about, together. This is the way we're approaching the notion of survival. We each find a way to navigate through the world by committing to creative disciplines that fortify us, often joining forces along the way.
Personal Statement:
“I’ve pretended to go mad in order to tell you the things I need to. I call it art. Because art is the word we give to our feelings made public. And art doesn’t worry anyone.”
Iain S. Thomas, I Wrote This For You
There is something in us as humans that makes us strive to find our place and our meaning in this life. Life has moments that are pure bliss but there are also moments filled with angst, and heartache that leave you feeling like you’re simply surviving. By confronting life’s struggles and enduring we build strength within us which acts as a connection point to others.
An alone togetherness was explored through the stargazing platform installation. Exploring connection to one another at at a great distance. I was intrigued that stargazing can be very personal and at the same time make you realize the vastness of the world. Creating a point of unity and comfort in knowing that somewhere else, someone may be sharing in this experience.
This work combines disciplines that I often work with including; graphic design, photography, typography and installation. Layered with nostalgic items like my grandmother’s Polaroids, local landscapes from my hometown, and visceral feelings I’ve experienced in past and present. These layers are a conflation of my personal development and identity.
But it is your personal story that becomes much more important to this work. As our past lives can create connections we were previously unaware of. It is my hope and intent with this work that you can experience you’re own shared connections.
